In Rivers Account of the Raising of the Troops for State and Confederate Service he has the following statement: The State troops that had been called down to Charleston relieved the militia who had been on duty for four months. These, returning to their homes in the city, began to form new organizations for continued active service.This would have occurred in January of 1861 concurrent with the formation of Gregg's, Butler's and Hagood's First.This regiment was formed from men who had gathered at Charleston from across the state.Company A - (also known as the Richland Rifles) - Richland District (County), Columbia area. Became Company A of the South Carolina 1st Infantry Regiment (Gregg's)Company B - (also known as the Darlington Guards) - Darlington District (County). Became Company B of the South Carolina 1st Infantry Regiment (Gregg's)Company C - (also known as the Edgefield Rifles or Riflemen) - Edgefield District (County).
