The area is the size of New Jersey. Rapid City lies on the eastern edge of the Black Hills. The city was founded in 1876.??General Custer's troops discovered gold in the area in 1874. Prospectors rushed in, along with Calamity Jane, Wild Bill Hickok, and others. The town of Deadwood became famous. Also famous in the area are the Needles, granite at a mile above sea level and highways into scenic areas, such as Sylvan Lake, with Harney Mountain as the highest point between the Atlantic Ocean and the Rocky Mountains, and then there is the Mount Rushmore National Memorial.??A visitor can stay at the famous Alex Johnson Hotel in Rapid City, one of the most modern hotels between Chicago and the Pacific Coast. Other excellent accommodations await the traveler.
