It is based on the spellings of place and personal names in the Lay Subsidy Rolls. The appearance of OE phonemes and sequences of phenomes is examined, the result being a delineation of the East Midland dialect area. The examination affords an approximate divide between the settlements of the Angles and the Saxons in Old English times. It also illustrates the original territory of the East Saxons, and throws light on the Anglo-Saxon invasion in prehistoric times.
