Harlan, and secondarily some papers and photos related to his son Justin Harlan (b. ca1846) and grandson Mark Twain Harlan ( b. 1875). The papers associated with Aaron include letters and appointments (though none related to his military service), 1844-1892; an 1881 journal of a steamboat trip up the Mississippi from Muscatine, Iowa to St. Paul, Minnesota with brief notes about the river towns; several of his poems, including the "Battle of Athens" and "A Dirge to Waterloo, County Seat of Clark County, Mo."; miscellaneous documents & ephemera including a political questionnaire, a leaflet "Why I Am a Protectionist", and a list of publications by Iowa Congregational minister William Salter; and several newspapers and clippings. Among Aaron's correspondence are letters from Charles Mason regarding land transactions, letters from relatives in Ohio regarding family history, and an 1873 letter describing a visit to Salt Lake City with observations about the Mormons. For Justin and Mark Harlan there is approximately one file each of letters dating from ca1872-1904. This collection also includes family portraits (identified and unidentified), as well as some landscape views associated with the communities where the Harlans lived (Croton and Selma, Iowa). Of special note is a 1926 photo showing Mark Harlan and others at the Croton depot with fuel wood they have procured for the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad. The materials in this collection were last in the family possession of Willa Harlan Scott, daughter of Mark Harlan. A more detailed inventory is filed with the collection.
