Book excerpt: Item is a letter addressed to Miss Anne from a British soldier writing from Standerton (July 7) and Greylingstad (July 10). Curling writes of his troop movements and activities in the Transvaal region during the Second Boer War. He mentions hearing the guns from Bullock's Column attacking Dew Berry Kop from his camp in Standerton, and says that a friend, Bob Parry, was captured by the Boers but released. Curling writes that "we loot every thing now," and adds that "we live on the best loot." He explained that the British burned or blasted every house to prevent the enemy from using them. He also describes capturing "a large Kaffir Krawl" presumably meaning "kraal," and turning over the African prisoners to be kept by the British government. He concludes with a note that his unit was under orders to join Covill's column [Corville's column] in a few days, with more fighting expected soon.
