Book excerpt: Platelet-rich plasma, popularly called PRP, is a fraction of autologous blood plasma containing concentrated platelets. PRP has gained increasing interest for its dramatic benefits in the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, especially for some refractory diseases such as pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, tendinopathy, or osteoarthritis. High concentrations of autologous growth factors released from activated PRP compensate for the deficiency of growth factors in these refractory diseases. In addition to the advantages of providing high concentrations of growth factors, PRP therapy also has the advantages of being safe, simple and effective in treating a wide range of acute and chronic musculoskeletal diseases. To date, PRP has been used in a variety of clinical practices for tissue repair and regeneration, pain relief, and to delay or even avoid the choice of surgery. This book covers a variety of topics from basic science to clinical applications and is suitable for both freshmen and experienced physicians interested in PRP therapy.
