Other award recipients included opera star, Mr. Jerome Hines, Rocco Marano, then President of of Bell Communications Research, and New Jersey historian and author, John Cunningham. Born on the eve of World War II as the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (NFIP), the March of Dimes Foundation led to the successful vaccination against polio, while supporting research, education and publicity on how to prevent birth defects. The awards were presented by New Jersey March of Dimes Chairman, Edward D. Knapp. Governor Kean also mentions two March of Dimes poster children, Amy Barclay (1983) and Billy Wineland (1984).
