Book excerpt: Introduced by Mr. Ken Foster, Governor Kean addresses the audience in attendance for the 18th Annual Dope Open, as the honorary chairman of the tournament. The fundraiser aids in the fight against drug and alcohol abuse. Kean acknowledges, Mary Mulholland, who began the Dope Open in 1968. The co-chairmen for the tournament were Herb Brennan and Ken Foster. The tournament directions were Charles Black, Robert Burkhardt, Nick Saccamano and Gene Forman. Kean also mentions that the coporate sponsors included AT & T, Cigna and Warner-Lambert. This event had then raised over $450,000 during the 17 years of it's existence. Some of the non-profit organizations that the funds wil benefits included Hope House, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility; New Jersey Prevention, Inc., the Senior Citizen Awareness Program and the Shire, a facility which treats addicted 12-17 year olds, giving them "a chance to live productive and meaningful lives."
