Book excerpt: Important notice about language credentials: It is advised that before purchasing a language book that you read the author's biography to know if they have the proper credentials of a language scholar. For example, what is their title? Is it Mr. or Doctor? Additionally, do they have a graduate degree and education as a linguist, including experience as a language professor at an accredited University. These are important aspects to consider before throwing your money away on a language book written by a layman, especially those claiming to be Taino linguists with no educational background to support their claim. This book has not only been written by a language scholar but it is the first book written in the Taino language, an indigenous language of the Caribbean thought to be extinct since the 16th Century. The book is a seminal work cleverly assembled by Professor Richard Morrow Porrata Doria, Ph.D., a retired professor from the Multilingual and Cultural Institute Division at the University of Puerto Rico and a retired colonel who served as a language instructor for the United States Army. Dr. Morrow, a Taino descendant, also received 120 hours of Native American linguistics training from the Northwest Indian Language Institute at the University of Oregon towards revitalizing Native American languages that have been dormant or thought to be extinct. Therefore, this book has been professionally developed to awaken the Taino language. Simple instruction is given in the first part of the book so that the reader can understand how the Taino language syntax formulates words and phrases. The main body of the book is the fairytale "Chin-kori" which is written in the Taino language and translated in English. Moreover, the fairytale has colorful illustrations that depicts animal characters with Chin-kori, a little boy guinea pig who is the main character, getting into mischief that he ultimately regrets. The theme of the fairytale is that one should listen to their parents, teachers, elders, and a divine authority and should take responsibility for their poor decisions or actions. The book is designed for both children and adults to learn and enjoy the Taino language along with attention to its beautiful rhythmic flow. An excellent school book for Puerto Rican culture, history, and language.
