More than one-half of those buildings are within the Downtown Manassas Historic District but outside the Manassas Historic District National Register boundary lines, wile the remainder are within the National Register Historic District. While these latter buildings had been surveyed in 1988, they needed to be incorporated into the Downtown Manassas Historic District survey so that the overall, comprehensive mapping inventory numbering and photographic recording process could take place for all 267 buildings. Existing inventory forms for previously surveyed buildings (completed in 1978-80 and 1989) number 126, bringing the total number of buildings in the Downtown Manassas Historic District to 393.
