Book excerpt: What is Unlawful Combatant A person who directly engages in armed conflict in contravention of the rules of war and is therefore alleged to not be protected by the Geneva Conventions is referred to as an unlawful combatant, an illegal combatant, or an unprivileged combatant/belligerent.
