Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Engineer and Railroad Journal, 1903, Vol. 77 The new locomotive shops of this road at Reading, Pa., are the most extensive as to size of buildings in this country. Reading is the natural geographical center of the road, and of miles of track no part is more than 150 miles from this point. The old shops were built in 1850, in James Mil holland's time, and numerous additions have been made, resulting in the usual rambling plant cut up by streets, which was very inconvenient in handling material and work. It could have been put into shape to meet the needs of the next ten years, but instead of doing this a portion of a large tract of land north of the union station was utilized, where the possibilities of endwise extension are unlimited. The old shops will be abandoned. This new location is near the car shops and is favorable for a central power plant for driving both locomotive and car shops and furnishing all the light ing required by the company in Reading.
