Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bowdoin College Bulletin, Vol. 273: Catalogue for the Sessions of 1944-1945; September 1944 Over the curriculum conservatism still held sway. Toward the end of Woods's term, international law, German (in junior year), and some additional rhetoric made minor breaches in the Latin Greek portion of the fortress, but the mathematics bastion suffered hardly perceptible damage. This resistance to change was due in part to the tendencies of influential persons, such as Parker Cleave land, on the Faculty, but also to the fact stated bluntly by L. C. Hatch in his History of the College, that the introduction of new subjects might cost money, and Bowdoin was poor.
