Book excerpt: Due to imbalanced development between rural and urban China, mature labourers tend to be attracted to urban areas, which has led to a crisis in rural China, as well as the general disintegration of the traditional village community, particularly in relation to safe and healthy social spaces for children and the elderly. This research explores 'communal construction', which is both social and physical, in one rural area in China to design a Community Cultural Center as an open public space for intergenerational activities by using local materials with communal participatory practices. It necessitates the following: literature research into the past and present social and spatial conditions of rural areas; an understanding of local resources, crafting and construction techniques, as well as architectural form; ethnographic readings of village life and its visual documentation; as well as precedent studies into significant cultural projects by architects working with local issues and communities. These will help inspire the innovation and exploration of new construction materials and technologies relating to local Chinese rural conditions in order to improve social spaces for intergenerational communities. The site selected for this case study is Huqing village, Wenchang, Hainan Province. This research has led to the design of a community center for cultural and daily life activities, and has been designed with an understanding of the site and research into Chinese rural culture. Its aim is to increase trans-generational interaction and bring local villagers together once again.
