Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A comprehensive training course for family planning (FP) service providers was instituted in Nepal in 1993. This course sought to provide FP workers with a complete range of essential information and skills by consolidating isolated courses and introducing competency-based, humanistic training. A May 1996 evaluation of the training and quality of FP services offered by trained providers was accomplished by observing 108 provider-client interactions at a total of 40 health posts in all 5 regions, interviewing 115 clients and 57 trained providers, and assessing the extent to which the training course has been institutionalized. The course has revolutionized FP training in Nepal through use of standardized materials, achievement of skills competency, emphasis on counseling, and improving technical infection prevention skills. It was found that: 1) the training of more than 800 providers has improved the role of FP counseling to allow clients to make FP choices; 2) the knowledge and skills of FP providers have improved; 3) clients continue to prefer female providers regardless of level of training; 4) problems exist where previous training conflicts with the current program, especially in the area of infection prevention (recapping needles); 5) FP clients were very satisfied with services but some preferred methods that were unavailable (sterilization or long-term temporary methods); and 6) time constraints occasionally prevented providers from practicing their skills. Recommendations include selecting female providers for training, giving additional assistance to trainees who have problems with the midcourse evaluation, improving infection prevention practice and counseling role-playing, and implementing post-training supervision and follow-up.." - POPLINE abstract
