Book excerpt: A literature search was conducted to determine (1) if a nozzle system currently exists that would produce large monodisperse (200 to 300 micron) droplets when injecting liquids into a high-velocity air-stream (up to 1000 ft/sec), (2) what extent current theories on Aerosol formation can be applied to high-speed dissemination of large, uniformly sized droplets, (3) to what extent these theories have been verified experimentally, and (4) whether additional theoretical and experimental investigations are necessary. A method currently available for producing the desired droplet size in the specified air velocity is that of adding high molecular weight polymers to the base liquid. Secondary to velocity are viscosity, surface tension, gas and liquid density, and diameter of injector. The greatest need appears to be improvements in the technique for sampling and measuring small droplets. (Author).
