Book excerpt: The problem was that the apparatus maintenance program of the Watertown Fire Department, essentially unmodified for twenty years, was dependent upon an uncertified firefighter/mechanic nearing retirement age with no plan in place to replace him. A recent study commissioned by the town to evaluate the operations of the fire department suggested continuing the current practice with little modification but failed to provide reasons to support that conclusion. The purpose of this research was to review the department's present program and identify methods of providing appropriate repairs/maintenance to the department's fleet and ensuring its long term success. Descriptive research was conducted to answer the following questions: 1.How has the Watertown Fire Department dealt with apparatus repair and maintenance over the past twenty℗Ư five years? 2. Has the present repair/maintenance program benefitted the department? 3. How do other fire departments in the area approach their repair/maintenance needs? 4. Would having a full-time certified mechanic enhance the current program and have a positive effect on operations?
