Book excerpt: Case files include all documents generated during the process of a civil or criminal court trial, and may be extensive, minimal, or nonexistent for any given case. They may include writs, affidavits, depositions, subpoenas, verdicts, pleas, motions, warrants, indictments, informations, recognizances, mittimuses, bonds, bills of costs, witness certificates, transcripts, documents relating to appeals, and supporting documents such as deeds, promissory notes, statements, and inventories. In Franklin county court, naturalization records are also included with case files. Inquests and jail reports are included with case files if docketed, or placed with miscellaneous court records if undocketed. Franklin county court clerks arranged case files alphabetically by plaintiff for each court term, rather than by docket number. This order has been maintained. Each case is filed with the court term in which it ended. In a given court term, some cases reached a judgment or verdict, while other cases were ended by the plaintiff before judgment. The clerk separated judgments from discontinued cases, so case files are arranged for each term with judgments in alphabetical order, followed by discontinuances in alphabetical order. Miscellaneous files include court administration documents such as jail reports, jury venires, vouchers for costs from court officials or witnesses, financial accounts, documents related to licensing of public houses and peddlers, and bar admissions. There may also be inquests and case files for undocketed cases. From 1901-1917 probation reports are included in miscellaneous court documents. There are also some probation reports on individuals included with their criminal case files.
