Previous authors and historians have not portrayed Frederick Douglass as an American hero who greatly influenced American History. Frederick Douglass was one of the most dynamic and influential individuals during the nineteenth century. He crusaded for the passage of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the United States Constitution, which were all ratified during his lifetime. He was a friend of President Abraham Lincoln and an adviser to President Lincoln during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Frederick Douglass taught himself how to read and write and became a very brilliant individual as an orator, a writer and entrepreneur. He is the father of the original Civil Rights Movement in America as he fought for the civil rights and voting rights for women and Blacks.
