Book excerpt: The current excitement in the scientific community about the III-V nitrides was reflected in this First International Symposium on Gallium Nitride and Related Materials (ISGN-1). The symposium consisted of nine half-day oral sessions (25 invited and 54 contributed talks) and four poster Sessions (113 presentations). The attendance was very high for all sessions, with an estimated peak of over 550 attendees at one of the sessions. The symposium reflected the large amount of work that has taken place since the field exploded about two years ago with the announcement of commercial blue light emitting devices. The invited talk program was designed to give a thorough review of the state of the art in the field. The large number of contributions, in the form of talks and poster presentations, showed much progress in understanding III-V nitrides, and in the production of optoelectronic devices based on these materials. These proceedings represent the current state of understanding in the field, reflecting about 75% of the work presented at the symposium.
