On the paternal side he is descended from an old family of New Jersey. His grandfather, David Beach, served in the war of the Revolution, and his grandmother, Mary Tomkins was a near relative of Daniel D. Tomkins, who was prominent in the early history of this country and at one time was governor of New York, and afterward vice president of the United States, for eight years, with President James Monroe.
