Zonal defending was brought into the main steam, by Arrigo Sacchi of AC Milan, in the late 1980's and early 1990's. Sacchi deployed a flat back four, in a 4-4-2 formation, that would prove enormously effective, as his teams would go on to win numerous titles. Sacchi's teams perfected the use of space and positioning in their zonal defensive tactics. He claimed his players were not the most athletic, but because they worked together as one unit, taking up excellent defending positions, they were extremely hard to beat. The exercises in this book are designed to teach the most important elements of Italian zonal defending. However, every exercises can be adapted to fit any teams specific formation and style of play. Each exercise should be viewed as a rough outline that can be built upon, adapted and changed. Coaching is about the sharing ideas, and I hope that you find value in the ideas shared in this book, as you make the exercises your own.
