Book excerpt: This is a biography of Anna Ella Carroll, who was born in 1815 to a wealthy southern family on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. She was given an academic education and was training to work with her father, who owned a large tabacco plantation and also served as Maryland's governor. Anna later leaves the plantation for Baltimore where she becomes involved in politics, writing, and practising law. When the Civil War breaks out, she becomes an advisor to President Lincoln and also wrote pamphlets criticizing slavery. Lincoln sent her to St. Louis where she gathered the information for her strategic plan in the Tennessee Campaign.
