Book excerpt: This eleventh volume in the Transactions series deals almost exclusively with Exeter Cathedral and reflects the balance of the conference held in 1985. The structural archaeology of the fabric and its enrichment and fittings are examined in parallel with the rich documentary evidence, and put in their art-historical contexts. This makes a valuable contribution to scholarship and to the understanding and hence appreciation of the Cathedral. Indeed, it should prove to be the most significant landmark in the study of the Cathedral since the 19th century and to be a definitive reference work for years to come. Colour plates are included for the first time in this series, relating largely to the analysis and interpretation of the West Front and a reconstruction of its colour scheme.
