Each section of town had a friendly grocer who played a very important part of daily living. East End, South End, Fairgrounds and West End were just a few of the areas in Red Wing where these small grocery stores were located from the late 1800s, and as late as the 1950s. This book not only mentions the early neighborhood grocers and meat markets in residential areas, but also a few of the more well-known grocery businesses and meat marketmen in down town Red Wing. The advent of supermarkets brought efficiency, greater choice among products, and often lower costs, but the closing of each neighborhood store meant a loss of character and the place to gather and renew the bonds shared by neighbors. With the opening of the self-serve supermarkets the small neighborhood grocer was unable to compete and slowly went out of business. This book shares the history of those small grocery stores and those of us who can remember our local neighborhood grocer can take a trip back to memory lane and reminisce of the candy counter or the amazement we had as we watched the butcher trim the meats.
