Book excerpt: "According to CDC, urinary tract infection (UTI) is among the most prevalent healthcare associated infections, contributing to 20% to 30% of all infections affecting nursing home residents. Older adults in the nursing homes are prone to developing infections due to their compromised immune system as a result of advanced age and other multiple medical conditions. One clinical practice site identified a need to reduce urinary tract infection (UTI).. The EBP change project included an educational intervention on providing effective urinary catheter and meatal care through the utilization of effective hand hygiene practices. This intervention was based on Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) safety program for long term care facilities in reducing healthcare acquired catheter associated infections. The AHRQ Catheter Care and Maintenance Questionnaire was to evaluate improvement in participants knowledge. As a result of the implementation of the educational intervention, there was a decrease in UTI rate from 4.5% (n=9) to 2.5% (n=5); foley catheter usage rate decreased from 7% (n=14) to 4.5% (n=9). And an overall improvement in participant's knowledge. This paper will discuss the design, implementation and evaluation of an EBP change project. " -- Abstract
