Book excerpt: President Ronald Reagan made Proclamation 5079, that is Women's Equality Day, on August 4, 1983 and was signed by New Jersey's Secretary of State, Jane Burgio (the first in U.S. history). The 19th Amendment to the Constitution guaranteed women the right to vote on August 26, 1920. Governor Kean reminds us in this speech that the organized movement for women's sufrage began in this country in 1848 and did not bear fruit until 1920. He further suggests that we redouble our efforts to make the Equal Rights Amendment a reality instead of merely a goal.
