Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Public Service Commission for the First District of the State of New York, for the Six Months Ending December 31, 1907, Vol. 2: Statistics of Public Service Corporations, for the Year Ending June 30, 1907 The statistics contained in this volume are compiled from returns made in accordance with the forms of report established for railroads and street railroads by the former Board of Railroad Commissioners and for gas and electric corporations by the former Commission of Gas and Electricity prior to July 1, 1907. Inconsistencies and obvious errors in the returns, wherever discovered by the Bureau of Statistics and Accounts, were corrected by the corporations reporting, and the figures herein published are therefore later and more authoritative than the preliminary totals published in the first volume of the Public Service Commissions report. The Commission assumes no responsibility for the accuracy of the returns. It has not audited the accounts of the corporations, or inspected the original records, and it is, therefore, quite possible that methods have been adopted which if known to the Commission would not meet its approval; and in the absence of a pre scribed system of accounting it is probable that varying methods have been followed by different corporations. No one should infer from the publication of these figures, therefore, that the Commission accepts their accuracy. The Bureau of Statistics and Accounts has endeavored in the analyses it has made of these statistics to point out occasionally to what extent conclusions cannot safely be based thereon, and the analyses which are here presented are the work of this Bureau based upon the reports made by the companies.
