Book excerpt: On May 2, 2009, the Australian Department of Defence released its Defence White Paper which contains a strong focus on Asia-Pacific security. A salient theme found throughout this White Paper is the effect that the rise of China will have on security in the Asia-Pacific region, the global distribution of power and resultantly on Australia's strategic interests. This paper demonstrates how the evolving security environment in the Asia-Pacific region and the rise of China are key factors in the formulation of this new White Paper and concludes with an examination of Canada's current perspective on Asia-Pacific security as it relates to its own security priorities.
