Book excerpt: An analytical investigation into the seismic performance of buildings designed with partially restrained (PR) connections as the main elements in the lateral forces resisting system was conducted. The 3- and 9-story buildings used in this analysis were redesigns of buildings previously designed using fully-restrained (FR) connections. Connection stiffnesses and capacities were varied over a range of values to determine their influence on the response of the PR frames. Nonlinear time history analyses were performed on a suite of ground motions to compare performance with the FR design.
