However, few study has investigated the linkage between internationalization and temporary employment. This study addresses this gap by examining the impact of international trade on temporary employment and labor flexibility in emerging economies. Based on Chinese firm-level data from the World Bank Enterprise Surveys in 2005 and 2012, we find that the exporters use more temporary workers and more rural migrant workers than non-exporters. Moreover, the exporting firms have higher labor flexibility than non-exporters: (1) they are more likely to use performance-based pay schemes to motivate temporary workers; (2) they offer shorter duration for temporary employment; (3) they use more female temporary workers than non-exporters. These findings indicate that temporary employment is an important strategy of emerging economy firms in response to demand uncertainty and intensified competition in international market.
