Not more than ten years have elapsed since the remarkable disease, of which I have the opportunity of showing you an example to-night, was first recognised and described by Sir William Gull although no doubt, as Charcot remarks, it must have existed lo Efiously. During the last few years it has become wide y own, and has attracted a large amount of attention - a result chiefly due to the investigations of Dr. Ord, of St. Thomas's Hospital, whose descriptions of the disease in its various stages, and whose account of the postmortem ap arances in two fatal cases, have thrown much light on the su jcet, and great] enhanced the interest it has excxted. The disease is slow an pro 've, and is characterised clinically by a gradual increase 0 bulk, with a general swelling of the integument, and a peculiar physiognom while along with this condition there supervene slowness o speech and of move ment, torpor of thought, subnormal tem rature, and diminu tion of the ingesta and excretions. Near y all the functions of the body seem to suffer more or less, so that Charcot's com parison of the patients to hibernating animals is not altogether mappropriate.
