Book excerpt: SS Milwaukee Clipper, formerly the SS Juniata, is a retired passenger ship and automobile ferry that sailed under two configurations and traveled on all of the Great Lakes except Lake Ontario. Milwaukee Clipper is the only US passenger steamship left on the Great Lakes. The vessel is now docked in Muskegon, Michigan. She was christened as Juniata in 1904, at the shipyards of the American Shipbuilding Company, in Cleveland, Ohio [and] carried passengers and freight ... between Buffalo, New York and Duluth, Minnesota ... She was sold in 1940 and extensively modernized at the yard of the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company. On June 3, 1941, she made her maiden voyage from Milwaukee to Muskegon, as Milwaukee Clipper and was used as a passenger ship and car ferry. She was called the "Queen of the Great Lakes" and carried about 900 passengers and 120 automobiles in the summer ... In 1970 she stopped running her regular route ... In May, 1989, the ship was designated a National Historic Landmark ... On December 2, 1997 she was sold for use as a museum in Muskegon, Michigan, her old home port.--Dust jacket flap.
