Book excerpt: Over the past twenty years, the field of quantum computing has progressed from the investigation of individual quantum systems towards the implementation of many-qubit processors. Distributing information processing over a quantum network consisting of many nodes that communicate via itinerant photons is one potential framework for achieving modular and extensible quantum computation. Systems of superconducting qubits strongly coupled to a continuum of photonic modes in 1D coplanar waveguides, described by the formalism known as waveguide Quantum Electrodynamics (wQED), are emerging as a promising platform for quantum communication. In this work, we develop a quantum module comprised of superconducting qubits strongly coupled to a 1D waveguide that can bidirectionally emit and absorb propagating microwave photons on-demand. These modules can be tiled in series along a waveguide to form an all-to-all, extensible quantum network.
